Deleted WhatsApp messages can only be recovered when a usable copy still exists. That might be in a backup or on an old phone. A recovery app cannot promise to recreate every deleted conversation, and reinstalling WhatsApp without checking first can make the situation worse.
Check what is actually missing
Search for the contact or group and check archived chats before assuming a conversation was deleted. If only a photo or document is missing, check whether you already saved a separate copy. Ask the other participant to resend their copy when appropriate.
Write down when you last saw the missing messages and when they disappeared. This helps you decide whether an available backup could contain them. Do not start a new backup simply to recover something that has already been deleted.
Look for an existing backup
On your phone, open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Note the displayed backup date and account. A backup created after the messages were deleted may not contain them. WhatsApp says a new Google Account backup replaces the previous one for that phone number.
Cloud backup options include a Google Account on Android and iCloud on iPhone; check the options offered in your installed version. Use the phone number and relevant cloud account associated with the backup. If the backup is end-to-end encrypted, you also need its configured recovery credential, such as the configured passkey, password or encryption key.
Restore only after checking the trade-off
A suitable backup may restore the retained chat history it contains, but it does not guarantee that every missing message will return. Expired disappearing messages are not restored. It is not a way to merge every old and new conversation. Before proceeding, save any important newer information separately and read the current WhatsApp restoration instructions for your phone.
WhatsApp explains that the restore prompt appears during initial setup, rather than as a Restore button inside Chat backup settings. Follow that official process only after confirming you have a suitable backup and access to the required account. Do not repeatedly uninstall the app hoping a missing backup will appear.
If the chats are still on your old phone
Moving phones is different from recovering deleted chats. WhatsApp offers a phone-to-phone chat-transfer route for supported devices. Keep the old phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you confirm that the transfer succeeded. A transfer moves the history that still exists; it does not recreate messages already deleted from the source.
Use WhatsApp’s Android chat-transfer instructions or its instructions for your specific phone combination. Avoid mixing steps for Android-to-Android, iPhone-to-iPhone and cross-platform transfers.
Check previously saved Android notifications
On supported Android phones, look under Settings → Notifications → Notification history. If history was enabled beforehand, it may contain a previously captured notification with some message text. Turning it on now cannot retrieve alerts from before it was enabled. This does not restore WhatsApp chats, every message or attachments. See Google’s notification guidance for device differences.
What if there is no backup or remaining copy?
There is no guaranteed recovery method. WhatsApp says its support team cannot restore your chat history from its servers. A notification-saving tool is also not a full chat backup: anything it did not save cannot be recovered from that tool, and notification text does not reconstruct an entire conversation or its attachments.
Be cautious about paying for a “100% recovery” promise. Ask what existing data the tool needs and whether it can show the specific missing content before purchase. Never give a stranger your WhatsApp registration code or cloud-account password.
Prevent the next loss
After resolving the current recovery attempt, choose a suitable backup schedule, check storage space and confirm that backups finish successfully. Keep your encrypted-backup recovery credential accessible to you. A backup setting alone is not proof that a usable backup was completed.
How to Uninstall WhatsApp: Checks Before Removal
Do not uninstall WhatsApp merely to look for missing messages. First confirm which usable backup exists, preserve newer information, and check the official restoration instructions linked above. Do not overwrite an older useful backup by starting a new one during this investigation.
If you deliberately decide to remove WhatsApp after those checks, use Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Uninstall on Android. Deleting your WhatsApp account is a different action and is not a message-recovery step.
