Source review: 18 October 2026. Updated using public official documentation. This is not a hands-on app test or a report of a personally witnessed incident.
Fake PhonePe APK is a search term used for imitation apps, false payment screens and files claiming unofficial features. It does not identify one tested product. The name alone cannot tell us what a particular file does or whether it contains malicious code.
If you installed a questionable app, focus on what access you granted and whether any real account activity occurred. If somebody only showed you a payment screen, verify the payment in your own account. These situations need different responses.
The earlier article claimed that we tested a fake app and assigned it review scores without supporting evidence. Those claims and blanket security comparisons have been removed. This guide provides official safety references and practical next steps, not a counterfeit download.

Identify what you are actually dealing with
An edited payment image is not the same as a modified application. A malicious app may seek access to information, while a simulation may merely display made-up figures. Neither should be trusted as evidence that money reached a recipient.
Write down the app name, where it came from and what it asked you to do. Avoid opening it repeatedly to experiment. You do not need to reproduce the suspected behavior or make a test payment to report a concern.
An APK is an Android installation format. The file extension alone is not proof of fraud, and a copied PhonePe logo is not proof of authenticity. The relevant question is whether the installation came from the genuine publisher through an authorized route.
Find the genuine service and support route
Start from PhonePe’s official website or its official app-store link instead of a forwarded download. Check the destination carefully before installing or signing in. A screenshot showing a developer name can be copied and is not the same as visiting the real listing.
PhonePe’s Trust & Safety page directs users to its in-app Help section and support.phonepe.com for assistance. It also provides an account-security reporting path. Use those routes rather than calling a number supplied by an unknown person.
Do not pay an activation, verification or recovery fee to a caller who claims to fix your account. Pause if the requested action does not match the support problem you actually have. Keep your existing complaint reference when following up.
Review permissions with context
Camera access may be relevant to scanning a QR code. Other permissions may support particular features. A single permission is not enough to label an app fake; review its source and the purpose of the access together.
On Android, open Settings, Apps, select the app and review Permissions. Deny access you do not want. If the app persuaded you to enable additional special access, review those settings too, using your device’s help information when needed.
PhonePe warns against installing remote-control apps at an unknown caller’s request. Its third-party-app warning explains how screen sharing can expose a phone to another person. Legitimate remote-support software can be misused, so consider who is requesting access and why.
Never demonstrate your banking steps while a stranger can see or control the screen. End that interaction and use a trusted route to contact the provider. A request described as customer support does not make it safe.
If you shared credentials or see unusual activity
Contact your bank immediately if money has moved unexpectedly or banking access may be exposed. Use a trusted device if you suspect the current phone is compromised. Follow the bank’s instructions for securing affected services.
Keep your UPI PIN and OTP private. PhonePe’s safety guidance says you do not need to enter a UPI PIN to receive money. Read the payment direction and recipient before authorizing any request.
Change exposed credentials through the genuine service, not through a link sent by the suspected caller. Review recent activity and keep a record of the steps you took. Do not assume one password change resolves every type of access that may have been granted.
If the concern is a fake payment confirmation
Open your own transaction history and receiving bank account. Match the amount, time and available reference with the claimed payment. A screen displayed on someone else’s phone cannot establish that your account was credited.
PhonePe has published a warning about fake payment screenshots. Its guidance recommends checking transaction history instead of relying only on an image. For a sale, keep fulfillment on hold until you can confirm receipt or resolve the payment issue.
If someone demands a refund for money supposedly sent by mistake, check for the original credit first. If an unexpected credit really exists, ask your bank how to handle it. Do not send a separate transfer to a new destination merely because a caller pressures you.
Report the issue without exposing more information
Use PhonePe’s official Help or support website to report the relevant account or payment issue. For cyber financial fraud in India, report through 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and inform your bank promptly.
Keep useful evidence: download source, messages, date, amount and any actual transaction reference. Share only what the official complaint process needs. Do not post full statements, OTPs, personal documents or account credentials in public comments.
Ask for and retain a complaint number. Follow up through the same genuine channel. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, and this article does not assign a legal penalty or determine who committed an offence.
FAQ
Can a fake app add real balance? A number displayed on a screen does not create bank funds. Verify actual account records.
Does a familiar logo prove the app is genuine? No. Start from an official provider route and verify the installation source.
Does every APK contain malware? No. File format alone does not establish safety or harm; do not install an unverified payment imitation.
Will uninstalling recover money? No. Account security and transaction disputes require separate action with the bank and provider.
How to uninstall and check the device
After preserving necessary complaint details, remove the unwanted app through Android app information and Uninstall, or through Google Play’s Manage apps & devices section. Delete the downloaded installer if you no longer need it; do not forward it to other people.
Run Google Play Protect and follow any warning it provides. Google describes Play Protect as checking apps for harmful behavior; a clean result is not proof that no information was ever exposed.
If removal fails or suspicious behavior continues, use trusted device support rather than installing a cleaner from a pop-up. Keep account protection and bank reporting moving separately. Removing the file is only one part of responding to a suspected compromise.
