For free internet calls from India, start with an app the other person already uses. WhatsApp, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams Free, Signal and Telegram offer ways to speak over an internet connection. They serve different needs, so this list compares useful options rather than claiming one app has the best call quality.

Free app-to-app calling is different from calling any mobile or landline number. Both participants need a compatible service or meeting access, and Wi-Fi or mobile-data costs can still apply.

1. WhatsApp: calls with existing contacts

WhatsApp supports voice and video calls to other WhatsApp users. It is a practical starting point when your family or friends already use it. Open the person’s chat and use the call control after confirming you have selected the correct contact.

WhatsApp says personal calls are end-to-end encrypted. This does not turn it into a free dialler for ordinary phone numbers outside WhatsApp. View WhatsApp on Google Play.

2. Google Meet: video calls and meeting links

Google Meet is useful when you want to share a meeting link and join from supported phones or computers. The Play listing previously associated with Google Duo now identifies the app as Google Meet. Use the current app and help instructions rather than searching for an old Duo APK.

Features depend on the account and device. Some capabilities, including meeting recording and certain AI tools, require eligible paid plans. Check the time and participant limits shown for your meeting. View Google Meet on Google Play.

3. Microsoft Teams Free: an option for former Skype users

Microsoft retired Skype on 5 May 2025 and directs users to Teams Free. Teams offers audio calls, video calls, chats and meeting invitations. It replaces the outdated Skype recommendation in the earlier version of this article.

Use the personal free service when that matches your needs. Paid work subscriptions and telephone-calling products are separate; a free Teams account does not mean unlimited free calls to mobile and landline numbers. View Microsoft Teams on Google Play.

4. Signal: private calls between Signal users

Signal provides voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption. Both sides use Signal, and you need an internet connection. Follow the registration or linking steps shown for your version; calls use internet data rather than ordinary carrier minutes.

Signal does not charge for the service, but your network provider may charge for data or registration messages. View Signal on Google Play.

5. Telegram: calls alongside your existing chats

If your contacts use Telegram, its voice and video calls may be convenient. Telegram’s documentation describes end-to-end encryption for these calls. Do not extend that statement to every Telegram feature: ordinary cloud chats use a different encryption model from Secret Chats.

Voice and video calling remain available without a Premium subscription. View Telegram on Google Play.

Choose by the call you need to make

  • A friend already using a messaging app: use the same app at both ends.
  • A planned group discussion: check Meet or Teams meeting access and limits before sending the invitation.
  • A regular mobile number without internet: check your carrier or a paid internet-to-phone provider’s destination rates. The five options above do not promise this for free.
  • A call abroad: check availability on both sides and any local network restrictions.

Before your first call

  1. Install through the official listing and confirm compatibility on your phone.
  2. Allow microphone access for audio and camera access only when you want video.
  3. Test with a consenting contact before relying on the app for an important appointment.
  4. If audio breaks up, check the connection or switch off video. No app can guarantee perfect quality on every network.

Choose a service with the people you call, and review its privacy and account settings. Do not pay for a promised free-call allowance unless the actual price, credit expiry and renewal terms are clear.

How to Uninstall a calling app

Before switching services, check the app’s backup or export options for conversations you want to keep. Open Android Settings → Apps, select the calling app, and choose Uninstall. Menu names vary by phone. Manage any paid plan separately through the provider that bills you.

Sources and selection method

Official store listings above, Microsoft’s Skype retirement notice, Signal installation help, Telegram’s free-feature guidance and Telegram’s encryption explanation informed this guide. The apps were selected by documented calling use cases; we have not performed comparative call-quality testing.
