Grammarly for Android helps you review spelling, grammar and wording while using your preferred keyboard. The current app works through a writing-assistant widget; older instructions telling you to enable the Grammarly Keyboard are outdated.
You can keep Gboard, SwiftKey or your phone’s keyboard. Grammarly offers suggestions, but you still need to check whether an edit preserves your meaning, names and facts.
View Grammarly on Google Play. Check the developer listing and compatibility on your own device before installing.
What changed from the Grammarly Keyboard?
The official Play listing identifies the app as Grammarly–AI Writing Assistant and refers to the deactivation of its older Android keyboard. The new approach adds writing assistance alongside an existing keyboard. It does not require you to replace that keyboard.
Grammarly’s support documentation lists Android 9.0 or later as the requirement, with a separate exception: Android Go devices are no longer supported. If you already use an older version on Android Go, the developer says you cannot reinstall it from Google Play after uninstalling. Store availability and device compatibility should take priority over an old download button.
How to set up Grammarly on Android
- Open the official Play listing and install the app if your device is supported.
- Launch Grammarly and follow its current setup instructions. Read the permission explanations before enabling access.
- Keep your preferred keyboard selected. Open a supported app and tap a text field to try the Grammarly widget.
- Write a short, non-sensitive example. Open the suggestions and accept or dismiss each change after reading it.
- Open Grammarly’s settings to adjust the widget and your English language preference.
Why does it request Accessibility permission?
Grammarly says it uses Accessibility permission to process text in apps and provide writing assistance. Consider that access before enabling it, especially on a shared or work-managed phone. Review the Grammarly privacy policy and your organisation’s rules for confidential writing.
You can stop the widget in an individual app: hold the G widget, drag it to the X, then choose Block this app. Grammarly also maintains a list of incompatible apps; requesting support does not immediately make them compatible.
Free features and paid features
A free plan is available, while advanced suggestions and some AI features have paid-plan or usage limits. The Play listing includes in-app purchases. Check the plan offered in your account, its renewal terms and the features you need before subscribing.
Avoid choosing a plan because you expect perfect English automatically. A clearer sentence can still contain a wrong name, date or claim. Read the final message yourself before sending it.
If the widget does not appear
- Check that Grammarly is enabled and that the app is not in its Blocked apps list.
- Confirm the necessary permissions are still enabled and reopen the app where you are writing.
- Check device compatibility, especially Android Go, and install available updates from Google Play.
- Use Grammarly’s official support if the problem affects only one app. Do not assume every text field is supported.
How to Uninstall Grammarly
Copy important text from Grammarly’s local Drafts into another document first. The developer says these drafts do not sync and can be deleted when you log out or reinstall. Turn off Grammarly’s Accessibility service, then open Settings → Apps → Grammarly → Uninstall.
Uninstalling does not cancel a paid plan. For a Google Play purchase, cancel through Google Play subscriptions; for a direct purchase, use the billing provider shown on your receipt.
Sources and review notes
This guide follows Grammarly’s installation instructions, Android user guide, blocked-app guidance and Android Go notice. It is a documentation-based guide, not a hands-on performance test.
Reader Recommendation
Try a short, non-sensitive draft with the free features first. Check whether the widget works in the apps you actually use and whether its suggestions improve your meaning before deciding on a paid plan. Save important drafts outside the app before signing out.
