Source review: 18 October 2026. This consumer guide covers India; it is not a business telemarketer registration service.
Telemarketing sign-up usually means giving a business permission to contact you about an offer. It does not guarantee a discount, prove that a caller is genuine or mean that you must accept every future promotion. Before entering your number, check which business receives it, why it wants to call and how you can change your choice.
If you searched for a way to stop promotional calls, you need preference management or a complaint channel, not another marketing form. In India, TRAI identifies 1909 and its official DND app as routes for managing unsolicited commercial communications. Use your telecom provider’s current instructions for the exact request.
This article helps you decide whether an opt-in is useful, keep a record of your choice and respond if calls become unwanted. Submit only your own number or one you are authorised to manage. Signing someone else up as a prank can expose them to unwanted contact.
Choose the right action
| Your goal | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Ask about a specific product | Use that business’s verified enquiry form |
| Receive optional offers | Read the promotional consent and sharing choices |
| Stop one company’s promotions | Withdraw consent through its verified contact route |
| Manage wider promotional preferences | Use your provider’s DND process or 1909 guidance |
| Report an unwanted call | Keep the number, time and details, then report promptly |
What to check before you sign up
Start with the organisation’s identity. A form should make it clear who is collecting your number and what you are requesting. Read the text beside the checkbox rather than assuming it relates only to the product shown above it. Look for separate references to calls, SMS, messages and sharing with partners.
Consider whether you actually want a phone conversation. If you only need a price or product specification, check whether the official website already provides it. Giving your number to several comparison forms can make it harder to remember which business you asked to call.
- Open the business’s official site or app independently.
- Check the offer, contact details and privacy information.
- Read optional promotional choices separately from the service you requested.
- Enter only the information needed for that enquiry.
- Keep a screenshot of the consent wording, date and confirmation.
A useful personal record can be as simple as “Company A, product enquiry, 18 October, calls requested, no partner option selected.” This is an organisational habit, not a guarantee that every later contact will match your choice. It helps you explain what happened if you need to follow up.
Does free registration mean every call is free?
No. A form with no registration fee does not tell you the price of a product, a callback or a call made while roaming. Check your telecom plan and the particular contact number. Do not infer call charges from the word “free” in a marketing headline.
Ask for the full offer in writing before buying anything: total price, recurring charges if any, cancellation conditions and what is actually included. Treat a discount as unconfirmed until you can see the applicable terms. You do not need to make an immediate buying decision simply because you requested a callback.
How DND preferences work in India
TRAI’s consumer FAQ lists calls or SMS to 1909 and the TRAI DND app for registering preferences. Follow the current prompts supplied by your operator. There is no universal instruction here to send “STOP” to 1909 and assume every call will disappear.
Keep the acknowledgement and check the status of your request. A promotional preference is different from an essential message about a service you use; do not classify every business contact as the same kind of communication. If you are unsure how a particular call was treated, ask your provider through its official support channel.
Withdraw consent from a particular business
Use the company’s verified account settings, privacy contact or support route. State that you want promotional contact stopped for your number, and save its response. You can use wording such as: “Please withdraw my consent to promotional calls and messages for this number. Please confirm the request and explain how I can check its status.”
Do not post your full phone number in a public comment to make this request. If the business needs to verify your account, complete that process within its official channel. A request to stop marketing is not automatically a request to close a paid service or delete an account, so specify your goal clearly.
Report unwanted calls with useful evidence
TRAI’s complaint guidance asks for the communication type, sender details, date, time, category and description. It lists 1909 among the available routes and explains that the provider supplies a reference for tracking. Submit promptly and follow the current deadline and instructions shown by your provider.
Keep your description factual: what was offered, whether you requested contact, and when it happened. A short record is more useful than guessing the caller’s identity. Blocking a number on the phone and reporting it are separate actions: blocking helps manage contact on your device; reporting gives the provider information to assess.
Do not promise yourself that one report will stop every unwanted call. Save the reference so you can check the outcome without starting from scratch. For a disputed resolution, ask the provider what escalation route applies to your case.
Check a caller independently
Knowing your name or referring to a recent enquiry is not enough to prove identity. If a call becomes unexpected or pressures you for payment or secret account information, end it and contact the organisation through a channel you independently know. Do not give passwords or banking verification codes to a caller.
Do you need an app, and how do you uninstall it?
You do not need to install an offer app merely to request a callback. If you installed an optional app, review its marketing and account settings before removing it. On Android, use Settings → Apps → the app → Uninstall, with wording varying by phone. Uninstalling alone does not withdraw permission already recorded by the business or remove your number from its records.
Frequently asked questions
Does signing up guarantee exclusive discounts?
No. Check the actual offer and eligibility conditions before relying on a claimed benefit.
Can I add someone else’s number?
Only if you are authorised to manage it and the person has agreed to the contact. Do not use sign-up forms for pranks.
Does DND stop every message immediately?
Do not assume that. Check your provider’s confirmation and the type of communication involved.
Are these instructions valid outside India?
The 1909 and TRAI routes described here are India-specific. Use the relevant regulator and operator elsewhere.
